Hi Stephanie,

I didn't work for them myself, but in my time in Mae Sot I met lots of people who were working for BVP, and all of them talked very highly of it.

There's a couple of people that arrived in 2005 around the same time as me that are still working for them!

One or two people I have met have ended up in a school that they weren't expecting - either in the middle of nowhere, when they were expecting something a bit more 'urban', or in a Mae Sot school, when they were expecting something a bit more 'adventurous'. Just be sure to talk to them about your expectations a bit before hand.

If I were joining BVP now, I would ask to go to one of the more remote schools. You would live in the school during the week, and could then come to Mae Sot at weekends should you feel the need.

It won't be like working in a Thai government school, but if you have a sense of adventure and want to learn about the Burma situation, then there's no better way than to head to Mae Sot and do some volunteering for BVP.

A lot of the people now in senior positions in the local NGOs started off with BVP and found the experience so rewarding (working with Burmese refugees) that they stayed on, and on, and on..... :-)

Good luck!

Hello!
Thank you for the information about volunteering in Thailand. My boyfriend and I teach English, and we are interested in teaching with the Burma Volunteer Program. We have been in touch with them, but are interested to hear from people who actually volunteered through the organization. Did you work for them? If so, any feedback or insights about the organization and your experience would be greatly appreciated! We look forward to hearing from you.
Kindest regards,
Stephanie Knox
